 What is Peace Corps?

Are you interested in an opportunity to travel the world and serve while doing it? Would you like to promote world peace and make valuable connections? Look no further, Peace Corps might be for you. The Peace Corps is a global service organization that volunteers in over 140 countries. Diverse trailblazers like yourself work closely with neighborhood leaders in your country of choice, to provide aid that is needed for that community.

The Three Goals of Peace Corps' Mission:

1. Helping the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.
2. Helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
3. Helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.

What is Peace Corps Prep?

Florida A&M University is proud to announce a partnership with the Peace Corps and the launch of Peace Corps Prep. This is an undergraduate certificate program that allows you to build your expertise in all new topics, learn foreign language skills, gain global knowledge, build your resume, network and will give you the experience needed to serve in the Peace Corps and any other career path. Though completion doesn’t guarantee admission into Peace Corps, it gives you a strong competitive edge in applying compared to other applicants. Undergrads from all majors are encouraged to apply. Please note that you do not need to be a U.S. citizen to participate In Peace Corps Prep, but to serve in the Peace Corps you will need U.S. citizenship.

What will I learn in Peace Corps Prep?

Peace Corps Prep certificate program was made to answer the question: How can you prepare yourself to be the best Peace Corps Volunteer you can be? Peace Corps highlighted four critical areas of the curriculum that are necessary to understand in order to be a successful Peace Corps leader. In order to complete the Peace Corps Prep certificate program, you will need to complete the following courses. They include:

1. Sector-specific skills.
2. Foreign language proficiency.
3. Intercultural competence.
4. Professional savvy and leadership.

 Peace Corps Prep six sectors

We understand that everyone has different interests, and so we offer options that will best fit you. You will complete hands-on training in one of the six Peace Corps sectors, and work with our program advisor to set up a curriculum and find the sector right for you. The six sectors that we are focusing on include:

1. Agriculture.
2. Community and Economic Development.
3. Education.
4. Environment.
5. Health.
6. Youth in development.

Benefits of service

Peace Corps is a unique opportunity that has many benefits to volunteers. Some benefits include:

- No cost to be a Peace Corps volunteer.
- Volunteers receive a housing and living stipend.
- Paid travel to/from the country of service.
- Awarded vacation time each month.
- Medical and dental benefits included.
- Career transition help.
- Certain public student loans are eligible for deferment or for Public Service Loan Forgiveness.
- Awarded an allowance of $10,000 (pre-tax) upon completion of service to help with post-service life adjustment.

Steps to get started

1. Fill out the interest form.
2. Meet with Florida A&M’s Peace Corps advisor.
3. Complete the Peace Corps Prep Application.
4. Complete the coursework and other requirements.
5. Complete the Exit Checklist.
6. Receive your Prep Certificate from the Peace Corps.
